Editorial Spreads

Five spreads for five real articles: coastlines, volcanoes, the Cascadia subduction zone, how gold nuggets form, and whether lucid dreaming helps with anxiety. Here the typography melts away so someone can happily read nine hundred words about volcanoes.

A spread titled VOLCANOS in glowing orange over a black photograph of lava, subtitled 'everything to know about nature's geologic architects'.

Let the reading flow

The typography stays quiet so the reader simply glides to the end of the article. Every spread runs a big entry point, a clear second level for pull quotes and sidebars, and a comfortable measure you can stay inside for three columns.

Each one still gets a single display moment that belongs to its subject: a ghosted headline for the tide, a glow for the lava, a fault line down the gutter.

A spread titled COASTLINES over a photograph of surf at dusk, with a deck reading 'The line where land meets water is constantly changing and reshaping' and three columns of body text.
Coastlines. The headline overlaps its own ghost, the one playful typographic flourish the piece allows itself.
A spread titled VOLCANOS in glowing orange over a black photograph of lava, subtitled 'everything to know about nature's geologic architects'.
Volcanos. The display face carries the heat so the body copy can stay calm.
A spread asking 'How the big one near Seattle could trigger an earthquake in San Francisco', with a torn white fault line running down the page between two columns.
Cascadia. The fault runs down the gutter and splits the spread, so the diagram is the layout.
A spread headed 'How Do Gold Nuggets Form? Earthquakes May be the Key' in gold serif type on navy, with a secondary headline reading 'Cobwebs of Gold'.
Gold nuggets. Two headline levels doing real work: the question, then the image that answers it.
A spread reading 'Lucid dreams can help reduce anxiety. Here's how.' set on an angle over a photograph of a figure standing under a dawn sky.
Lucid dreaming. The angled deck tilts the reader slightly off balance before the body copy steadies them.
